Would you like to teach a 'classroom' remotely? A live stream on YouTube is the best means to this end. It is easy to start, allows participants to ask questions and is easy to review afterwards. Here is a brief explanation of how to start a live stream.
What do you need?
- A webcam or a laptop with a built-in webcam;
- A microphone (often built into the webcam);
- A stable internet connection;
- A recent version of Chrome or Firefox;
This is how you start a livestream
- Go to YouTube.com;
- Click the
-icon on the top right of your screen;
- Click “Go live”;
- If you're already logged in to a Google account, skip to step 6.
- Log in to a Google account. If you don't have one yet, you can create one via the “Create account” link.
- Click on “Get Started” and then select that you want to stream using your own name;
- You will now be redirected to YouTube Studio. You may be asked here for a phone verification. This verification is necessary to prevent automated bots from consuming all of YouTube's bandwidth.
- When verified, you can “Go live” by clicking the
-icoon.
- You will be asked to grant access to your webcam and microphone. Allow Youtube access.
- Select “Webcam” at the top.
- Now enter a title and description of your live stream, and check the privacy settings. Choose "Hidden" in the privacy settings, so that only participants with whom you have shared the link can follow the live stream.
- You can also indicate a time here if you do not want to start the livestream immediately (and you only want to plan and prepare).
- Click on “Save”. Your webcam will take a snapshot that is used as a thumbnail.
- Click “Go live”.
- Do you want to start a scheduled live stream? By clicking the
-icon > “Go live” > “Manage” you can get back to your livestream to start it.
Tips & Tricks
- Before starting the livestream, notify your class what time you will start, and share the link they need to follow the livestream. You will receive this link when creating the live stream.
- Does a participant keep posting unnecessary or annoying comments? It is possible to block this participant for five minutes if needed.
- Do you want to stream more than just your webcam (for example your screen)? That is possible as well! In step 10, instead of “Webcam”, select the “Stream” option. Note; You do need additional software for this, such as the free recording software OBS. This software is available for both Windows and Mac OS. Download the program here, and watch this tutorial video on YouTube.
