How can I make a screen cast?

Would you like to share a powerpoint presentation with your commentary included? Or show how a certain program works? Then a screencast is the solution! A screencast is a (video) recording of your screen, accompanied by commentary. There are 2 ways to record a screencast: (1) With recording software or (2) in Powerpoint. Below is a brief explanation and a number of tips & tricks.

What do you need?

  • A laptop or PC;
  • A microphone or sound recorder (this is often built into the computer);
  • A Vimeo or YouTube account (to share the video)

1. This is how you record a screen cast using recording software

  1. Download the free OBS recording software. This software is available for both Windows and Mac OS. Download the program here. 
  2. Install the software on your laptop or PC and start the program.
  3. Watch this tutorial video on YouTube.
  4. Make your own video! 

 

2. This is how you record a screen cast using Microsoft Power Point

  1. Open Powerpoint and make a slide show.
  2. Is your slide show finished? Great, now you can start recording your video!
  3. Watch this tutorial on recording video's in Power Point.
  4. Make your own video! 

 

The combination of audio, video and images can make learning much more engaging. The video has to be well made to achieve that though!
